What is M4V?
M4V is based on the MPEG-4 Part 14 (MP4) container format — it's Apple's extension of the standard MP4 spec. The file structure is essentially identical to MP4, with the same H.264 or H.265 video codec and AAC audio. The M4V extension was introduced by Apple to distinguish iTunes Store video content from generic MP4 files. Non-DRM M4V files (those you create yourself) are functionally identical to MP4. The video data, audio data, and metadata are stored in exactly the same way. The critical distinction: iTunes Store M4V files include an additional Apple FairPlay DRM layer, which encrypts the video data and requires authentication with an Apple ID that has the purchase license. DRM M4V files: play only in Apple-approved applications (iTunes, Apple TV app, Apple devices). Non-DRM M4V files: play in VLC, QuickTime, and many other players, and can be freely converted. If you have M4V files you created yourself or received from a non-iTunes source, they almost certainly have no DRM. If you purchased them from the iTunes Store, they may (older purchases) or may not (most newer purchases) have DRM — Apple removed DRM from music in 2009 and has been reducing DRM on video over time.
M4V pros and cons
Advantages
- Deep integration with Apple ecosystem (iTunes, Apple TV, iPhone)
- Supports H.264 and H.265 video with excellent quality
- Supports chapters and multiple audio tracks
- Same quality as MP4 — uses identical codecs
- Can contain subtitles, closed captions, and multiple audio languages
Limitations
- DRM versions are restricted to Apple devices and apps
- Less universally supported than MP4 on non-Apple players
- Cannot stream from web browsers without Apple-specific support
- Converting DRM M4V requires removing DRM first (legally complex)
- Effectively redundant — nearly identical to MP4 for non-DRM content
When should you convert M4V files?
Convert M4V to MP4 when: playing on non-Apple devices (Android TV, smart TVs, Windows media players), uploading to video platforms (YouTube, Vimeo), sharing with non-Apple users, or importing into video editing software that doesn't natively support M4V. For non-DRM M4V files, conversion to MP4 is simple and lossless (just a container change). For DRM M4V files, you need to either use Apple's authorized playback apps or consult the legal and technical requirements for removing FairPlay DRM in your jurisdiction.
