Why MP4 is the universal video format
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container format — it holds video, audio, subtitles, and metadata in a single file. The key is what goes inside: H.264 video + AAC audio is the combination that every device and platform accepts without complaint. Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, iMessage, WhatsApp — they all expect MP4/H.264.
MKV is popular for downloaded video because it supports multiple audio and subtitle tracks, but it fails on most upload flows and won't play on iOS at all. MOV is Apple's container, great on Mac but problematic on Windows and Android. AVI is Microsoft's older format — still widely distributed but not supported natively by most web platforms. Converting any of these to MP4 resolves the problem instantly.
MP4 to GIF is one of the most common conversions online — short clips for Slack, Discord, GitHub comments, and Reddit all work better as GIF than as a video embed. MP4 to MP3 is the quick way to rip audio from a recorded meeting, YouTube download, or music video. Both run in your browser here, free, with no upload.
