Why does my iPhone use HEIC?
Apple switched to HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) as the default iPhone camera format starting with iOS 11 in 2017. The reason is simple: HEIC files are roughly half the size of a JPEG at the same visual quality. For a phone that takes thousands of photos, that storage saving matters.
The problem is compatibility. Windows, Android, most websites, social platforms, and design tools don't natively open HEIC files. When you try to send an iPhone photo to a non-Apple user, they often can't open it. When you upload it to a service, it gets rejected. When you try to use it in Photoshop without the right plugins — nothing.
The solution depends on your use case: HEIC to JPG for maximum compatibility and sharing. HEIC to PNG for lossless quality when editing. HEIC to WebP for web use where you want modern compression. HEIC to PDF for document workflows.
