How to Convert PSD to PNG

Converting PSD to PNG is the right choice when your design has transparency — logos on transparent backgrounds, icons, web UI elements. PNG preserves the alpha channel perfectly, while JPG doesn't support transparency at all. This guide covers converting PSD to PNG while maintaining transparent backgrounds.

    Adobe Photoshop

    File → Export → Export As → PNG → make sure 'Transparency' is ticked → Export. Or File → Save a Copy → PNG. For a transparent background, hide the Background layer (eye icon off) before exporting.

    GIMP (free)

    Open the PSD in GIMP. For a transparent PNG, don't flatten: Image → Flatten Image fills transparent areas. Check the layer has an alpha channel (Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel), then File → Export As → name it .png → Export → choose the compression level → Export.

    Photopea (free, in the browser)

    Go to photopea.com, open the PSD with File → Open, then File → Export as → PNG. Transparent areas stay transparent. It's free with ads.

Why convert PSD to PNG?

PNG supports full alpha channel transparency — every pixel can have a transparency value from 0 (fully transparent) to 255 (fully opaque). This makes PNG the ideal format for logos, icons, and interface elements that need to be placed over different backgrounds. JPG has no transparency support — converting a PSD with transparent background to JPG fills the transparency with white (or whatever the background colour is).

How do I export a transparent PNG from Photoshop?
Make sure the background layer is hidden or deleted — a visible white background layer will be included in the PNG. Then: File → Export → Export As → PNG → ensure 'Transparency' checkbox is enabled → Export. The PNG will have a transparent background (shown as a checkerboard pattern in Photoshop). Verify by opening the PNG in Preview (Mac) or Paint (Windows) — transparent areas appear as white or checkerboard.
Why is my PSD to PNG file so large?
Large PSDs with high-resolution artwork produce large PNGs. PNG is lossless — it stores all pixel data. Strategies to reduce size: (1) Reduce the pixel size if the PNG is for the web; changing only the DPI setting doesn't change the file size. (2) Reduce canvas size to the actual content bounds (Image → Trim in Photoshop). (3) Use 8-bit PNG instead of 24-bit if the image uses fewer than 256 colours: File → Export → Save for Web (Legacy) → PNG-8 in Photoshop.
