Why convert PNG to JPG?

PNG and JPG serve different purposes. PNG is lossless — every pixel is stored exactly, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos, icons, and images with text where compression artifacts would look terrible. The downside is file size: a PNG screenshot can be 5–20x larger than the same image as JPG. JPG uses lossy compression optimised for photographic images — it reduces file size dramatically with minimal visible quality loss. The right format depends on your image: photographs, product images, and general scene images work perfectly as JPG. Logos, screenshots with text, and images with sharp geometric shapes look worse as JPG due to ringing artifacts around edges. If you are unsure, PNG is always safe; JPG is the right choice when you need smaller files and your image is photographic in nature.

Your files never leave your device

FormatDrop runs the conversion engine entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. No file upload. No server. Nothing stored. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching: zero upload requests.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
Yes — JPG is a lossy format, so converting from lossless PNG to JPG introduces compression. At high quality settings (90%+), the difference is invisible for photographic images. For screenshots, graphics, or images with text and sharp edges, you may see subtle blurring or ringing artefacts around high-contrast boundaries. If quality preservation is critical, keep the file as PNG.
What happens to transparent areas in my PNG?
JPG does not support transparency. When converting a PNG with a transparent background to JPG, the transparent areas are filled with white. If you need to preserve transparency, convert to WebP or keep it as PNG.
How much smaller will the JPG be?
It depends heavily on the image content. Photographic images (landscapes, portraits, products) typically compress to 3–10x smaller as JPG. Screenshots and images with flat colours and text may compress to only 1.5–3x smaller. The savings are most significant for photographic content.
