How to Convert MOBI to EPUB

MOBI is Amazon's legacy e-book format for Kindle devices. EPUB is the open standard used by every non-Kindle reader — Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook, and virtually every reading app. Converting MOBI to EPUB lets you read your book on any device without being locked to Amazon's ecosystem.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Upload your MOBI file

Select your .mobi file. Non-DRM MOBI files (personal documents, sideloaded books, books downloaded as MOBI) convert cleanly. Amazon KFX-format Kindle purchases require stripping DRM first (see FAQ).

    Go to converter
  2. 2

    Choose EPUB as output format

Select EPUB. The converter parses the MOBI structure — chapters, table of contents, fonts, images, and metadata — and writes them into a valid EPUB3 or EPUB2 file.

  3. 3

Verify the EPUB on your reader

Transfer the EPUB to your Kobo, sideload into Apple Books, or open in a desktop reader like Calibre's E-book Viewer. Check that chapters appear correctly in the table of contents and that images render properly.

Why convert MOBI to EPUB?

MOBI is Kindle's proprietary format; EPUB is the format the rest of the world uses. Converting MOBI to EPUB is the declaration of reader independence — your book, your device.

Your files never leave your device

FormatDrop runs the conversion engine entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. No file upload. No server. Nothing stored. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching: zero upload requests.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert Kindle books (KFX/AZW3) to EPUB?
Purchased Kindle books use DRM (Digital Rights Management) that prevents conversion without authorization. DRM-free Kindle books (personal documents sent to Kindle, or books from publishers that opted out) convert freely. Circumventing DRM is illegal in most jurisdictions regardless of whether you purchased the book.
How do I convert MOBI to EPUB using Calibre?
Calibre is the best free desktop tool: open Calibre → Add books → select your MOBI → click Convert books → choose EPUB as output format → OK. Calibre handles chapter structure, metadata, and cover images automatically.
The converted EPUB has scrambled chapters — how do I fix it?
MOBI chapter structure sometimes doesn't map cleanly to EPUB. In Calibre, try the conversion again with 'Look & Feel' → 'Extra CSS' blank and 'Structure Detection' → 'Detect chapters using XPath' enabled. If the MOBI has a guide/TOC element, Calibre uses it for chapter detection.
