How to Convert EPUB to MOBI for Kindle

Kindle e-readers don't support EPUB — Amazon's format is MOBI (or AZW3 for newer Kindles). Converting EPUB to MOBI lets you read any ebook on your Kindle.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Use Calibre (best free method)

Download Calibre (calibre-ebook.com, free). Import your EPUB → right-click → Convert Books → Convert Individually → Output Format: MOBI → OK. Right-click the converted book → Open Containing Folder to find the MOBI file.

    Go to converter
  2. 2

Send EPUB via Amazon's Send to Kindle

Modern Kindles (2019+) can receive EPUB directly. Email to your Kindle's email address (Amazon account → Manage Content → Personal Document Settings). Amazon auto-converts. Or use the Send to Kindle desktop app.

  3. 3

    Transfer via USB

After converting to MOBI with Calibre: connect Kindle via USB → copy MOBI to the 'documents' folder → safely eject → the book appears in your library.

Why convert EPUB to MOBI?

EPUB is the universal ebook format used by Apple Books, Kobo, and libraries. Kindle doesn't support EPUB natively — converting to MOBI bridges the gap between your EPUB library and your Kindle.

Your files never leave your device

FormatDrop runs the conversion engine entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. No file upload. No server. Nothing stored. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching: zero upload requests.

Frequently asked questions

Does Kindle support EPUB in 2024?
Yes — Amazon added EPUB support via Send to Kindle in 2022. However, sideloaded files via USB still need MOBI/AZW3 format. Send to Kindle is the easiest approach as it handles EPUB natively.
What is the difference between MOBI and AZW3?
MOBI is the older Kindle format. AZW3 is Amazon's updated format with better typography and CSS support. Calibre can convert to either — use AZW3 for newer Kindles (Paperwhite 3+) for better formatting.
