Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Play MKV without converting using VLC
Install VLC for Mobile from the App Store. Open the Files app or Safari → download your MKV → open with VLC → tap to play. VLC decodes MKV on iPhone with excellent quality. For sending via iMessage or uploading to social media, you'll still need the MP4 conversion below.

Convert using Documents by Readdle
Install Documents by Readdle (free). Open Documents → find your MKV in the Files tab → long-press → Convert → choose MP4. The conversion runs on-device. Quality depends on the MKV's original codec — H.264 inside MKV converts fastest with best quality.
- 3
Use an online converter from Safari
Open Safari → go to formatdrop.com → choose Video Converter → upload your MKV → select MP4 → download. This approach is simplest if your MKV is under 500 MB and you have a good Wi-Fi connection. The converted MP4 downloads directly to your Files app.

Convert on a Mac and AirDrop to iPhone
If you have a Mac nearby: use FFmpeg: ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c:v copy -c:a aac output.mp4. AirDrop the resulting MP4 to your iPhone — it'll go directly to Photos or Files.
Why convert MKV to MP4?
iOS only natively plays MP4, MOV, and M4V containers. MKV files require third-party apps. Converting to MP4 makes videos work in Photos, iMessage, AirPlay, and every iOS app without needing a specialised player.
Your files never leave your device
FormatDrop runs the conversion engine entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. No file upload. No server. Nothing stored. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching: zero upload requests.
