How to Convert MOV to MP4

MOV files recorded on an iPhone, Mac, or any Apple device won't play on Windows or Android without extra software — and most video platforms reject them. Converting to MP4 takes under a minute and makes your video playable everywhere. This guide shows you how using your browser, no upload required.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Go to the FormatDrop MOV to MP4 converter

Open formatdrop.com/mov-to-mp4 in your browser. The page loads ffmpeg — the professional-grade video engine — directly into your browser tab.

    Go to converter
  2. 2

    Upload your MOV file

Drag your MOV file onto the drop zone or click to browse. The file loads into your browser's local memory — it never leaves your device.

  3. 3

    Convert MOV to MP4

Conversion uses ffmpeg running in WebAssembly. The MOV container is rewrapped to MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio — the same codecs already inside most MOV files. This means fast conversion with no quality loss in most cases.

  4. 4

    Download your MP4

Click Download to save your MP4 file. It will play on Windows Media Player, VLC, Chrome, Firefox, Android, Samsung TVs — essentially everything.

Why convert MOV to MP4?

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container format, and it's deeply embedded in the Apple ecosystem — every iPhone, iPad, and Mac records video as MOV by default. The problem is that MOV is natively supported only on Apple devices and software. Windows doesn't include a MOV codec in a fresh install. Android can't play MOV files. YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and most other platforms officially support MP4 but may reject or mis-process MOV uploads. MP4 with H.264 video is the true universal format — it is the single format that plays natively on every browser, operating system, game console, smart TV, and mobile device without exception. Converting MOV to MP4 isn't a quality upgrade or downgrade — it's simply switching to the container format the world actually uses.

Your files never leave your device

FormatDrop runs the conversion engine entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. No file upload. No server. Nothing stored. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching: zero upload requests.

Frequently asked questions

Is there quality loss converting MOV to MP4?
In most cases, no. When the MOV file already contains H.264 video (which iPhones use), the converter simply rewraps the video stream into an MP4 container without re-encoding. This is called remuxing and is lossless. If the MOV contains ProRes or HEVC video, a re-encode to H.264 is required, which involves a small quality reduction at the encoding step — but at high quality settings this is imperceptible for normal viewing.
Why won't my MOV file play on Windows?
Windows 10 and 11 do not include a QuickTime or MOV codec by default. When you double-click a MOV file, Windows Media Player or Movies & TV will show an error or offer to search for a codec in the Microsoft Store. The easiest fix is to convert the MOV to MP4 — it will then play natively in every Windows app without any codec installation.
