Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Use the Shortcuts app
Open the Shortcuts app. Tap the + button to create a new shortcut. Add the action 'Get Images from Input'. Add 'Convert Image' and set it to PNG. Add 'Save to Photo Album' or 'Save File'. Use an online converter in Safari
Open Safari and go to formatdrop.com. Tap the image converter, upload your JPG, and download the PNG. The file saves to your Downloads folder in the Files app. Tap and hold → Save to Photos if you want it in your camera roll.
- 3
Use a converter app from the App Store
Image Converter apps on the App Store (search 'image converter') convert JPG to PNG directly on your iPhone. Open the JPG in the app, select PNG output, and save. Most free apps handle basic conversions without watermarks.
- 4
Verify and use the PNG
Open the converted PNG in Photos or Files to verify it looks correct. PNG files from iPhone conversions are typically 2–4× larger than the JPG source. Share via AirDrop, iMessage, or Mail. Some apps that require PNG specifically (like certain design apps) will now accept the converted file.
Why convert JPG to PNG?
Design apps, document scanners, and some upload forms on iPhone specifically accept PNG. The built-in Shortcuts app provides a free, permanent solution for JPG-to-PNG conversion without needing third-party apps.
Your files never leave your device
FormatDrop runs the conversion engine entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. No file upload. No server. Nothing stored. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching: zero upload requests.
