Why convert AVIF to GIF?

AVIF is a high-efficiency modern image format with excellent compression and full-color support. GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colors and no transparency gradients. The only reason to convert AVIF to GIF is platform compatibility — when you're uploading to a service that specifically requires GIF and won't accept anything else.

Older email marketing platforms, some digital advertising networks, certain social platforms for animated content, and legacy CMS tools sometimes mandate GIF. AVIF support in these contexts is often nonexistent. If your AVIF is a still image being fed into one of these platforms, GIF will work but with a visible quality cost: 256 colors means gradients, photographs, and complex images will show color banding and dithering artifacts.

Simple graphics with flat colors survive the conversion much better than photographs. The resulting GIF will often be larger than the source AVIF — sometimes much larger — because GIF's LZW compression is far less efficient than AVIF's codec for most image types. If the content is a still image and file size matters, consider converting to JPEG or PNG instead of GIF. If the destination platform genuinely requires GIF and the image is simple, the conversion will get the job done.

Quality & file size: AVIF to GIF

Typical file sizes: AVIF 0.8–2 MB → GIF 1–5 MB.

Converting from lossy AVIF to lossless GIF will not recover detail the AVIF codec already discarded — but the output will not degrade any further. This is useful when you need a lossless format for editing or compatibility without additional compression artifacts.

Color depth: AVIF supports 12-bit, GIF supports 8-bit.

Transparency: AVIF supports transparency. GIF preserves transparency.
