Why convert M4A to MP4?
M4A is Apple's audio format — used for iPhone voice memos, GarageBand exports, Apple Podcast downloads, and iTunes music. The format is excellent for audio, but useless for video platforms that require a video file to exist.
YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook all require video uploads. They don't accept raw audio files. If you have an M4A from any of these sources and want to post it as video content, you need to wrap it in an MP4 container with a video track.
Converting M4A to MP4 creates a 1280×720 video with a dark gradient background and your original audio. For YouTube specifically, this is the standard approach used by podcasters, musicians, and meditation teachers to publish long-form audio on the platform. YouTube processes and hosts the resulting MP4 normally, and viewers play it like any other video — the "video" is just a still background behind the audio.
M4A files are stored in the MPEG-4 container (same as MP4) with AAC audio. Our converter re-muxes the audio into a new MP4 container with an added video track. Processing is fast because the audio doesn't need to be re-encoded in many cases — only the video track (a single still frame) needs to be created.
Quality & file size: M4A to MP4
Typical file sizes: M4A 3–6 MB → MP4 100–300 MB.
Both M4A and MP4 use lossy compression. We transcode at high quality settings (equivalent to MP4's recommended web quality) to minimize generational loss.
Color depth: M4A supports standard color, MP4 supports standard color.
Transparency: M4A does not support transparency. MP4 does not support transparency — transparent areas become solid white.
