Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Convert with iTunes / Apple Music
Open iTunes (Windows) or Music (Mac). Go to Preferences → Files → Import Settings → Import Using: AAC Encoder. Set the quality to 256 kbps. Drag your WAV files into the library. Select them, right-click → Create AAC Version. iTunes creates M4A copies. Delete the original WAV from iTunes if you want to free up space.

Convert with FFmpeg
FFmpeg: `ffmpeg -i input.wav -c:a aac -b:a 256k output.m4a`. For VBR: `ffmpeg -i input.wav -c:a aac -q:a 1 output.m4a` (q:a 1 is highest quality). Batch: `for f in *.wav; do ffmpeg -i "$f" -c:a aac -b:a 256k "${f%.wav}.m4a"; done`. Output .m4a files play natively on all Apple devices and modern Android.

Choose the right bitrate
For music: 256 kbps AAC is excellent — the same quality used by Apple Music and the iTunes Store. For podcasts and speech: 96–128 kbps is transparent. For archiving music at near-lossless quality, use 320 kbps or consider ALAC (lossless AAC). AAC is about 30% more efficient than MP3.

Import to iPhone or Apple Music
Drag the .m4a files into Music app or iTunes on your Mac or PC. Sync to iPhone using Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows). M4A plays natively at full quality on every Apple device. Streaming services and podcasting platforms also accept M4A or AAC uploads.
Why convert WAV to M4A?
WAV files are uncompressed and take enormous storage space — a typical song is 50–100 MB as WAV, versus 4–8 MB as M4A. Converting to M4A makes your audio library a fraction of the size while sounding essentially identical on any playback device.
Your files never leave your device
FormatDrop runs the conversion engine entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. No file upload. No server. Nothing stored. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching: zero upload requests.
