How to Convert PDF to DOC

DOC is Microsoft Word's legacy binary format from Word 97–2003. While most modern systems use DOCX, some document management systems, fax servers, and government agencies still require DOC specifically. Converting PDF to DOC extracts the text from the PDF and formats it as a Word 97–2003 document.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Upload your PDF file

Select your .pdf file. PDFs created from Word, Google Docs, or other word processors convert with high fidelity. PDFs from scans require OCR first.

    Go to converter
  2. 2

    Choose DOC as output format

Select DOC. The converter extracts the text, preserves basic formatting (headings, bold/italic, tables), and saves in the binary Word 97–2003 format.

  3. 3

    Download and edit in Word

Open the DOC in Word 97 onward (any version handles DOC). Review formatting, tables, and headers. Complex layouts may need manual adjustment.

Why convert PDF to DOC?

PDF locks layout; DOC unlocks editability. Converting PDF to DOC is occasionally needed when the recipient's workflow strictly requires the legacy Word format.

Your files never leave your device

FormatDrop runs the conversion engine entirely inside your browser using WebAssembly. No file upload. No server. Nothing stored. You can verify this by opening DevTools → Network tab and watching: zero upload requests.

Frequently asked questions

Should I convert to DOC or DOCX?
Use DOCX for any modern workflow — it's faster, smaller, and the current Microsoft standard. Convert to DOC only if a specific system requires it (some old DMS systems, certain government file submissions). DOC is otherwise legacy.
Why does my converted DOC look wrong?
PDF preserves visual layout, but the underlying text and structure may be missing. Converters reconstruct the document from extracted text, which doesn't always match the visual PDF perfectly. Tables and multi-column layouts are particularly prone to issues.
How do I convert PDF to DOC using LibreOffice?
`libreoffice --headless --convert-to doc input.pdf`. LibreOffice opens PDFs as Draw documents by default; this command exports text content to DOC format. For better results, use a dedicated PDF converter or Adobe Acrobat.
