How to Convert PDF to DOC

DOC is Microsoft Word's legacy binary format from Word 97–2003. While most modern systems use DOCX, some document management systems, fax servers, and government agencies still require DOC specifically. Converting PDF to DOC extracts the text from the PDF and formats it as a Word 97–2003 document.

Ways to convert PDF to DOC

    Microsoft Word (2013 or later)

    File → Open the PDF; Word converts it to an editable document. Then File → Save As → Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc). Simple text PDFs come out well; complex layouts need tidying.

    LibreOffice (free)

    LibreOffice opens PDFs in Draw, which can't save .doc. Use Writer's PDF import from the command line instead: soffice --headless --infilter="writer_pdf_import" --convert-to doc input.pdf. Each line ends up in its own text frame, so editing is awkward.

    Adobe Acrobat (paid)

    Export PDF → Microsoft Word → Word 97-2003 Document. Acrobat's conversion handles tables and columns best, and can run OCR on scans.

Why convert PDF to DOC?

PDF locks layout; DOC unlocks editability. Converting PDF to DOC is occasionally needed when the recipient's workflow strictly requires the legacy Word format.

Frequently asked questions

Should I convert to DOC or DOCX?
Use DOCX for any modern workflow — it's faster, smaller, and the current Microsoft standard. Convert to DOC only if a specific system requires it (some old DMS systems, certain government file submissions). DOC is otherwise legacy.
Why does my converted DOC look wrong?
PDF preserves visual layout, but the underlying text and structure may be missing. Converters reconstruct the document from extracted text, which doesn't always match the visual PDF perfectly. Tables and multi-column layouts are particularly prone to issues.
How do I convert PDF to DOC using LibreOffice?
`soffice --headless --infilter="writer_pdf_import" --convert-to doc input.pdf`. Without the --infilter part, LibreOffice opens the PDF in Draw, which can't save .doc. The result keeps the layout as separate text frames; Word or Acrobat give more editable output.
