Quick Verdict
Use OGG when…
Use OGG Vorbis for existing archives where re-encoding would reduce quality, or for compatibility with older software and game engines that support Vorbis but not Opus.
Use Opus when…
Use Opus for all new audio: web apps (WebRTC already uses Opus), streaming, podcasts, voice chat, and anywhere you want the best quality at a given bitrate — Opus is superior to Vorbis at every bitrate below 128 kbps.

Frequently asked questions
Is Opus better than Vorbis for music?
At equal bitrates, Opus produces higher quality audio than Vorbis across all tested bitrates. The gap is most pronounced below 128 kbps. At 128 kbps, Opus is roughly equivalent to Vorbis at 192 kbps. For archiving music at high quality, both are transparent (indistinguishable from lossless); for streaming at lower bitrates, Opus is clearly better.
What's the difference between .ogg and .opus file extensions?
.ogg files almost always contain Vorbis audio (though the OGG container can hold other codecs). .opus files contain Opus audio inside an OGG container, but the .opus extension signals the codec so players know what to expect. Never store Opus audio in a .ogg file — players may try to decode it as Vorbis and fail.
Does Safari support Opus?
Safari added Opus support in Safari 16.4 (released March 2023 with macOS 13.3 and iOS 16.4). Before that, Opus was the main reason web developers had to offer MP3 fallbacks. As of 2025, Opus has near-universal browser support and can be used without fallbacks for most audiences.
