Frequently asked questions
Does FLAC sound better than ALAC?
No. Both are lossless — they decode to identical PCM audio. If you have the same recording encoded as FLAC and ALAC, they are mathematically identical when decoded. Any perceived difference is a placebo effect. Sound quality differences come from the recording, mastering, DAC, amplifier, and headphones — not the lossless codec.
Can I convert FLAC to ALAC without quality loss?
Yes — this is one of the very few audio conversions with zero quality loss. Since both are lossless, converting FLAC to ALAC (or vice versa) is a lossless transcode: the decoded PCM audio is re-encoded identically. Use dBpoweramp, XLD (Mac), or FFmpeg (`ffmpeg -i input.flac -c:a alac output.m4a`).
Which should I use for archiving music?
Either is equally good for archiving. FLAC is more universally accepted and is the preferred format for most ripping software (EAC, Whipper). If you're primarily an Apple ecosystem user and want seamless iTunes integration, ALAC is fine. Many audiophiles keep FLAC as master and convert to ALAC for Apple devices.
Does iPhone support FLAC?
Yes, since iOS 11. The Music app, Files app, and most third-party players can play FLAC on iPhone. However, Apple's ecosystem tools (iCloud Music Library, iTunes Match) don't sync FLAC — they convert it. For full Apple ecosystem integration, ALAC is still smoother.
