What is a HEIC file (and why iPhones use it)

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It’s the photo format Apple adopted as the default on iPhone and iPad with iOS 11 back in 2017. Inside the container is an image compressed with HEVC (H.265) — the same technology used for 4K video — which packs a photo into roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG at the same visual quality.

For Apple, that’s a smart trade. When you shoot hundreds of photos, halving the file size saves real storage, and iOS, macOS, and iCloud all handle HEIC seamlessly. HEIC also supports nice extras like 16-bit colour, transparency, and bundling Live Photo frames into one file.

The catch is everything outsideApple’s walls. Windows often can’t open a .heicfile without an extra codec. Android can’t open it. Most websites, content systems, e-commerce uploaders, and older photo editors reject it outright. So the moment you try to email an iPhone photo to a colleague on Windows or upload it to a form, you hit a wall. How to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone or iPad

You have two good options on iOS, depending on whether you want a one-time fix or a permanent change.

Option 1 — stop shooting HEIC altogether.If you’d rather your camera just saved JPGs from now on:

1. Open Settings → Camera → Formats.
2. Select Most Compatible.

Every new photo is now captured as JPG. This doesn’t touch the HEIC photos already in your library — only future shots.

Option 2 — convert existing HEIC photos.There’s a built-in trick: when you share or AirDrop an iPhone photo to a non-Apple destination, iOS often converts it to JPG automatically. But that’s inconsistent and you don’t control the quality. How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac

On a Mac, HEIC files open fine in Preview and Photos — the challenge is exporting them as JPG for someone else. The built-in route:

1. Open the HEIC file in Preview.
2. Choose File → Export…
3. Set Format to JPEG, pick a quality, and click Save.

Windows is where most people hit trouble. Windows 11 (22H2 and later) includes the HEIF/HEVC support needed to view HEIC, but many Windows 10 machines still need a paid codec from the Microsoft Store, and even then nothing converts the file to JPG for you. Rather than chase codecs:

HEIC vs JPG: quality & when to keep HEIC

Converting to JPG isn’t always the right move. Here’s the honest comparison so you can decide per use case.

On quality: converting HEIC to JPG at 85–95% is visually lossless — you won’t see a difference on screen or in a normal print. The only real cost is the extra disk space JPG takes. If you genuinely need every pixel preserved (archival work, further editing), convert to PNG instead, which is lossless.

Keep HEIC when the photos live only on your Apple devices and you care about storage.
