Why convert AIFF to MP3?

AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) is Apple's lossless uncompressed audio format, used as a primary export format in GarageBand and Logic Pro. When you export a GarageBand project as "Audio File", the default output is AIFF — perfect audio quality, but impractical file sizes. A 3-minute track at 44.1 kHz / 16-bit stereo produces a 30 MB AIFF file.

That size creates real problems for sharing. Email services cap attachments at 25 MB. WhatsApp and iMessage compress or refuse large audio files. YouTube's audio-upload-via-video workflow struggles with AIFF. Most Windows computers can't play AIFF without VLC installed. Android requires a third-party app. Streaming platforms like SoundCloud and Bandcamp accept MP3 but the experience with AIFF is slower to upload.

Converting AIFF to MP3 reduces a 30 MB file to roughly 4 MB at 192 kbps — a 7.5× reduction with audio quality that's indistinguishable from the original for virtually all listening contexts. MP3 plays on every device, every platform, and every streaming service without additional software.

When to keep AIFF: if you're working in a professional audio chain (mastering to CD, broadcast delivery, or archival), always keep the AIFF original. Only convert to MP3 when distributing to consumers or uploading to platforms. The AIFF is your master; the MP3 is your distribution copy.

The conversion process: AIFF stores raw PCM audio. Converting to MP3 applies the MPEG-1 Layer III psychoacoustic compression algorithm, which removes audio information the human auditory system is least sensitive to. At 192 kbps, the resulting MP3 sounds essentially identical to the AIFF in typical playback conditions.

Common reasons to convert AIFF to MP3:

  • Share music created in GarageBand or Logic Pro with non-Mac users
  • Upload finished tracks to SoundCloud, Bandcamp, or music distribution platforms
  • Send audio files by email without hitting attachment size limits
  • Use GarageBand compositions as background music in video or presentation projects

Quality & file size: AIFF to MP3

Typical file sizes: AIFF 30–50 MB → MP3 3–5 MB.

Both AIFF and MP3 use lossy compression. We transcode at high quality settings (equivalent to MP3's recommended web quality) to minimize generational loss.

Color depth: AIFF supports standard color, MP3 supports standard color.

Transparency: AIFF does not support transparency. MP3 does not support transparency — transparent areas become solid white.
