Why convert DNG to PNG?
Converting DNG to PNG produces a lossless raster image from your RAW photograph. Unlike converting to JPG (which applies lossy compression), PNG stores every pixel without any compression artifacts. This makes DNG-to-PNG the right choice for photographers doing design work, compositing, or archiving a processed version of their RAW.
DNG files are RAW — they contain the unprocessed sensor data from your camera. PNG is a processed raster image. Browsers can't read RAW files, so the converter uses the DNG's full-size preview when it has one (iPhone ProRAW does), or else develops the sensor data at full size with the open-source LibRaw decoder, then saves the picture without adding any new compression.
Why PNG over JPG for a processed RAW: if you plan to use the image in a design tool (Figma, Canva, Photoshop, GIMP), further edit it, or composite it with other layers, PNG preserves every pixel exactly as rendered. JPG would introduce subtle compression artifacts at edges and in gradients that become visible after further editing or scaling. PNG is also the required format for many creative platforms, government document portals, and technical documentation systems.
File sizes are large: a 12-megapixel iPhone ProRAW photo made a 24.5 MB PNG in our test, and a 20-megapixel photo makes roughly 40–60 MB. For most everyday sharing and uploading, convert to JPG instead.
Common reasons to convert DNG to PNG:
- ›Use a Lightroom Mobile or Google Pixel photo in a design project requiring PNG
- ›Archive a processed version of a RAW file in lossless format
- ›Upload to a platform or form that requires PNG and rejects JPEG
- ›Composite RAW photography with other design layers without compression artifacts
Quality & file size: DNG to PNG
Typical sizes: DNG 20–35 MB (20MP sensor); PNG 8–25 MB (12MP photo).
Both formats keep every pixel, so the PNG looks the same as the DNG.
On the free tier, PNG output has a repeating formatdrop.com watermark; Pro output doesn't.
